Old Trafford Cricket is one of the UK’s most sustainable sporting grounds. We’ve worked hard to reduce the environmental impact of the grounds, including the amount of litter produced on site. MIW has helped us to reduce our plastic footprint and improve our visitor offering with the installation of 11 bottle fillers. MIW handled the project with ease, finishing the installations ahead of time. Overall, it’s been a complete success.

Any facilities selected for sporting venues face a fairly unique set of challenges. They not only have to fulfil the demands of thousands of users, but they have to do so within a relatively short space of time. Whether tennis, football, cricket or rugby, most spectators are unwilling to leave the stands during play. This means that any public amenities, including drinking equipment, face a pre-match, post-match and half-time scrum. For some bottle fillers and drinking fountains, this can cause problems, with filtration, chilling and refilling systems requiring time to function. This is why it’s so important to select the right equipment for its intended environment.
During the course of the last 30 years, MIW Water Cooler Experts has become the UK’s leading authority on indoor and outdoor water bottle refill stations. And one of the sectors we specialise in supplying is sporting venues. We are currently working with Wimbledon Tennis AELTC, Premier League footballs clubs, the new Wembley Stadium, Old Trafford Cricket ground, and many more besides. And as we progress with each new client, we discover more ways that we can tailor our service to help in this arena.
Meeting the hydration needs of sporting venues
Every sporting venue needs to cater for three distinct audiences: staff, players and spectators. Each group has slightly different requirements, and the equipment selected should reflect this. Nevertheless, there are still standard criteria that always need to be met. These include:
User safety and hygiene
MIW only works with WRAS-approved equipment. This means that our bottle fillers and drinking fountains have all been tested to Government and water authority standards and found to be fit for public use. Many also have additional health and safety features, including silver ion antimicrobial coatings, lead reduction and UV filtration systems. The latter works to protect users from 99.99% of all waterborne microorganisms, including bacteria such as E. coli and legionella.
Ease and speed of use
Almost all of the equipment recommended by MIW for sporting venues has hands-free or push-button operation. This means that it can be used quickly and easily by a high volume of people. The units are also wheelchair accessible, which is important in any public area. Mains-fed units ensure a constant supply of water, while high capacity filters and coolers guarantee the best-tasting water is available year-round.
Security and durability
Security is obviously an enormously important consideration for any location which frequently hosts high volumes of people. And yet it’s often over-looked when it comes to drinking equipment. That’s why we have worked with some of our leading global suppliers to produce bottle fillers and drinking fountains with additional security features, such fixed security shelves to stop suspect packages being hidden on or inside the equipment. Specially designed access panels held with security screws are also used to seal the units to both prevent tampering and increase durability. With all moving parts sealed away and strong stainless-steel bodies, there is little chance for accidental damage or vandalism.
At MIW, we not only offer a large selection of branded water coolers, drinking fountains and bottle filling stations suited to the needs of sporting venues, but we also manufacture our own units specifically designed for stadiums and public facing events. A customisation service is available too – this includes technical upgrades, such as enhanced cold weather protection for outdoor equipment, as well as branding and styling. This means that we can always supply the perfect equipment for any given venue.
Despite the obvious similarities, every sporting venue is different and has its own unique requirements. So, we always commence every job with a full site inspection. This allows us to ascertain the best equipment for each setting. For us, it’s all about getting the job done well, and building customer relationships. We will never attempt to upsell or inflate. We have no reason to.
For security’s sake, every MIW engineer is DBS vetted prior to appointment. Trust is one of our watchwords, and we take it very seriously. All of the team adhere to our ethos of accountability, and MIW will always be ready to help in the event of any problem.
Post-installation, we offer an array of services. We are very happy to simply act as equipment suppliers. But we can also install, service and maintain equipment for you. Many of our clients work with us on a turnkey rental agreement, whereby equipment is supplied, sanitised, serviced and periodically upgraded. The main thing is to find a solution that works for your organisation.
As well as bringing an additional public service, the provision of refill stations and drinking fountains can make a significant contribution to any venue’s sustainability policy. They also help to reduce litter, which has its own financial implications.
If you would like to find out more about the hydration equipment suited to your organisation, please get in touch. The MIW team would be delighted to help.
