Liverpool Street Station is the UK’s third busiest train station. We care for more than 66 million passengers annually, a large percentage of whom were purchasing bottled water in the station. Seeing an opportunity to provide a new customer service and help in the fight against waste plastic, we applied to the London Drinking Fountain Fund for two bottle fillers. MIW Water Cooler Experts quickly and efficiently got to work assessing the site and installing the equipment. The bottle fillers were an immediate hit with passengers, refilling the equivalent of 150,000 plastic bottles in the first six months. We’re really pleased with the results.

The UK's Longest Established Water Cooler Company
With billions of passengers travelling by rail, air and road every year, the UK’s transport providers have a unique set of needs when it comes to the provision of hydration facilities for customers and staff. User numbers have the potential to be consistently higher than in almost any other permanent location. And yet equipment reliability is only one of the considerations that managers need to take into account when looking to upgrade or install water dispensers. That’s why it’s so important for organisations to seek the support of experienced professionals before selecting bottle fillers and drinking fountains for their sites.
Meeting the needs of airports, rail stations and other transport providers
MIW Water Cooler Experts is already working with some of the UK’s largest transport hubs and providers to deliver clean, fresh drinking water to passengers. Our experience in this field dates back 30 years. During that time, we’ve developed a sharp understanding of what airports, railway stations and bus terminals need from their hydration facilities. In terms of security and safety, as well as the usability of the devices. That’s why we manufacture drinking fountains and bottle fillers specifically for this audience. It’s also why we provide a customisation service, so if a particular model appeals but isn’t entirely practical, we can upgrade it to ensure that it meets the exacting security standards of the industry.
So, what can MIW offer to your transport organisation?
What you can expect when working with MIW
Cutting edge technology
The MIW catalogue contains bottle fillers, watercoolers and drinking fountains to suit all environments and all budgets. Both indoor and outdoor water dispensers are now available with a host of innovative technical features, including: low-energy eco-cooling systems; lead reduction filtration; and UV filters able to destroy 99.99% of all waterborne microorganisms – including E. coli, legionella, cryptosporidium and giardia – without affecting the taste or smell of the water. The latter is particularly important, protecting you against widespread passenger, staff and pilot/driver illness.
Government and water authority approval
A point of pride for MIW is that we only work with WRAS-approved equipment. This means that all of the water dispensers that we provide, and all of their components, have been rigorously tested to ensure suitability for public use. This certification not only means that user safety is assured, but that as an organisation you have all the documentation you require for any water authority or Government inspection.
All of the drinking fountains and bottle fillers that we recommend for installation in transport hubs are wheelchair accessible. Many have been designed for hands-free operation. And the instructions for use can be simply displayed in pictogram form. All of these features ensure that the units are accessible to as wide a range of users as possible, including the less able bodied and those who cannot read English.
Water dispensers are intended for public use. In high footfall areas, such as rail stations and airports, they can be exposed to rough usage or even abuse. We will never recommend a unit for these locations that cannot withstand heavy-handed use or even vandalism. All moving parts are concealed behind security screw protected panels. The outer casing of most units is made from heavy gauge stain steel. And with hands-free or push-button operation, there is little opportunity for water damage.
Customisation and branding
We know how important branding can be. That’s why we offer a service to customise all of our water dispensers. Whether you require a branded decal, or would simply like your outdoor bottle fillers to be finished in a specific shade of powder coating to fit in with your organisation’s aesthetic, the MIW team will hand-finish your equipment to an exacting standard.
With security being such a vitally important issue for transport hubs, we have worked with some of our international suppliers to ensure that MIW can provide bottle fillers and drinking fountains with additional security features. These include fixed security shelves and specially designed access panels to prevent suspect packages being hidden on or inside the equipment. We have also produced our own bottle fillers specifically for the transport market, incorporating all of the most important features, from security to ease of use.
It doesn’t end with the equipment
Of course, maintaining security is as much about people as it is about devices. This is one of the reasons why all MIW engineers are DBS vetted prior to appointment. Everyone who works with us embodies the values of the company, and that includes responsibility, accountability and social understanding. Our team take pride in being friendly and polite while never wavering in professionalism. And that carries through from the first point of contact to any required aftercare.
MIW’s aftercare services vary and can be tailored to your needs. Some businesses prefer to simply purchase their water dispensers and deal with all other aspects independently. While others will work with us on a turnkey rental agreement, benefitting from ongoing maintenance, sanitation, servicing and periodical equipment upgrades. Either way, should there be any equipment failure, we will always be ready to take your call and provide support in whatever way we can.
